We accept marriage license applications for marriages to be performed in Minnesota. If you wish to apply for a marriage license, you may want to fill out the Marriage Application Worksheet prior to your arrival in order to save time in our office. The marriage license costs $115.00 unless you've had 12 hours of premarital education with a minister or a person licensed to practice marriage and family therapy. If you have had 12 hours of premarital education, the license fee is $40; please bring the completed and signed Educator's Statement when you come to our office to apply for your marriage license.
We also issue certified copies of any marriage recorded in Big Stone County since 1881. The Minnesota County Recorder’s Association has developed a statewide search engine for marriages that have taken place in Minnesota. That website is available to the public and can be found at www.moms.mn.gov. This website is a useful tool for genealogists or if you’re not sure where your marriage certificate was recorded (your marriage certificate is filed in the county you purchased your license, which is not necessarily the county where the wedding took place). Although the website shows marriages that have taken place throughout Minnesota (except Scott County), the marriage certificates still do need to be obtained from the county where the license was purchased.
