Fiber Broadband Update
Federated Telephone Cooperative has been awarded a grant through the Minnesota Office of Broadband to extend broadband service to underserved and unserved residents of Big Stone County.
Big Stone County is proposing to use a method of financing called Tax Abatement Financing to make a loan to assist Federated Telephone Cooperative in financing a portion of the cost of a fiber optic broadband telecommunications network to be located within the County. The County will set terms for the abatement, including determining the amount and duration of the abatements, identifying the parcels whose property taxes will be allocated toward the financing, and determining the portion of the taxes payable from the identified properties to be used for the Tax Abatement Financing. Tax Abatement Financing is a tool that can be used by cities, counties, and school districts to finance public infrastructure and assist development that is in the public interest.
